2016 Nike Black History Month Collection

Every January, Nike launches its famous Black History Month Collection that pays homage to the achievements of black athletes around the globe. Since its debut in 2005, the annual collection from Nike has evolved from just a single Air Force 1 to an extensive assortment of products.

The limited-edition 2016 collection is inspired by seminal individuals who rewrote history with their pivotal performances. This year's iteration features a total of 28 products, spanning from basketball, tennis, football, running, Nike iD, and Jordan Brand. Aside from honoring black heritage, in sport and beyond, Nike also provides financial support through it's Ever Higher Fund, which brings mentorship, sport, and all of its benefits to African American youth.

Serena Williams’s perpetual drive to trump expectations, break records and redefine a sport. Kobe Bryant’s phenomenal 81-point game for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2006. Sanya Richards-Ross’ gold-medal-winning 400-meter race. Chris Paul’s off-court drive to level the playing field. These pivotal performances and seminal individuals rewrote history and catalyzed community — they also serve as the driving inspiration behind the 2016 Black History Month collection.

Since its debut in 2005, Nike’s annual Nike Black History Month collection has evolved from a single Nike Air Force 1 to an extensive product assortment that pays homage to the achievements of black athletes worldwide. The limited-edition 2016 collection, with staggered launches running from January to mid-February, features a vibrant cascade of 28 products, spanning tennis, basketball, football, running, Nike iD and Jordan Brand. Its distinctly global sensibility is reflected in a vivid Pan African-inspired color palette, with custom geometric motifs.

The collection kicks off with Basketball footwear releases including the LEBRON 13, KD8, KYRIE 2 and the KOBE 11. Signature models from Lebron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant will also be offered in youth sizes. Other category launches include: Air Force 1, Nike Air Footscape Magista and Nike Roshe One (including an additional BHM-themed Roshe One Nike iD offering) from Nike Sportswear; NikeCourt Flare footwear from Tennis; Streak LT 3 footwear from Running; and the Air Jordan 1 Nouveau and AJ1 High for girls from Jordan Brand. A BHM-themed Magista Obra FGboot and Jordan Spike 40 follow in February. BHM apparel comprises hoodies, T-shirts and shorts.

The Black History Month collection honors and celebrates Black heritage, in sport and beyond, around the world while also providing financial support to Nike’s Ever Higher Fund, which was created to bring mentorship, sport and all of its benefits to African American youth.

Nike is proud to support numerous national and local organizations that provide services to underrepresented youth, including African American youth, during the year, through community development, coaching, city league sport programs, and early childhood development programs. Long-time partners include the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Boys and Girls Clubs, National Head Start and Coach Across America.

Adidas and NBA unveil NBA All-Star 2016 uniforms

Adidas, the official on-court apparel provider for the National Basketball Association (NBA), today unveiled the uniforms and apparel collection for the 65th NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 14 in Toronto. The uniforms incorporate elements indigenous to Canada and pay homage to Toronto’s NBA history, passionate basketball fans and cosmopolitan energy.

“This is the first NBA All-Star Game to be played outside the United States, and it is a very exciting time for basketball in Canada,” said Chris Grancio, adidas global basketball general manager. “To honor this global celebration and pay tribute to Toronto – the site of the NBA’s first game – we’ve incorporated design elements that are inspired by the city’s basketball history, sports culture and unique fashion scene to make an All-Star collection that players and fans will love.”

The red-and-white Western Conference and white-and-blue Eastern Conference uniforms feature a maple leaf overlay on the front of the jerseys as a tribute to the national symbol of Canada, while Toronto’s cityscape is featured across the back to represent the host city. Clean, single-layered fonts are a nod to the NBA’s early days in Toronto, where the first NBA game was played on Nov. 1, 1946, between the Toronto Huskies and New York Knickerbockers.

A star patch that incorporates the maple leaf and NBA logo is displayed on the upper back of the uniforms, while black-and-gold jock tags display the Toronto Raptors’ alternate team colors and claw logo. Featured on the jersey’s neck liner and shorts’ draw strings is a mosaic of flag colors that represent the multinational makeup of the league’s players.

The NBA All-Stars will sport warm-ups that embrace Toronto’s winter fashion and style. Black and heather gray fleece jackets include star patches that acknowledge the number of NBA All-Star appearances for each player, while patches on the right zipper pocket call out the game’s top accolades, including: Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, NBA All-Star Game MVP and NBA Championships. The on-court warm-ups also include a performance fleece shooting shirt and tapered pant with white and gold trim.

NBA All-Star jerseys, as well as a full range of NBA All-Star apparel, including adult and youth T-shirts, adult track jackets and headwear, will be available on NBAStore.com and at the NBA Store in both Glorietta and Mega Fashion Hall and select adidas Stores in January.

SPARTA heralds first triathlon concept store in the country in 2016

Sports and Recreational Training Arena, otherwise known as SPARTA, once again heralds another first in the field of sports-facility management in the country.  Come 2016, it is set to open the first and only triathlon concept store named, Maximus Athlete's Shop Café, which caters to Multi-sport athletes such as cyclists, runners, swimmers, as well as coffee connoisseurs.

Owned by well-known triathlon Coach Andy Leuterio, Maximus will be a 280-square meter area, within the hectare-wide SPARTA facility, which will showcase different bikes, garments, equipment and accessories for Multi-sport athletes.  Among the brands and products it will carry will be Lynskey titanium bicycles, Specialized bikes & accessories, Newton running shoes, Brooks running shoes, Muc-Off bike detailing supplies, CW-X compression gear, GoPro action cameras, Oakley eyewear, Knight composite racing wheels, Stages power meters, Kuat bike racks, Transition One apparel, TYR swimming gear, Swiftwick compression socks, Body Geometry FIT, among others.

Andy Leuterio says that he got sold with the concept when he toured the SPARTA facility a couple of months ago and envisioned the concept store, which he named after his son, Maximus.

He wanted a venue for Multi-sport athletes where they can buy their equipment, gear, accessories and get their bikes washed at the bike spa.  Leuterio says, "While doing this, they can also have a sip of their specialty coffee as well at Maximus. We will be using Coffee Roasters specialty blends and single origin beans.  After all, coffee and cycling go hand-in-hand."

This is all in line with SPARTA's vision to "Influence everyone to get into wellness and active living.  We call it #SpartanResolutions, and using this hashtag means committing one’s self to the Spartan lifestyle. I want to encourage everyone to go beyond a typical New Year's resolution and aim to create bigger and sustainable changes within yourself", says Amanda Fernandez, owner of SPARTA.

"We will also launch our SPARTA Football Workshop for Adults with the help of Dream Big Pilipinas founder, Miguel Bermundo.  Dream Big Pilipinas is a football association in the Philippines that uses the sport of football as a catalyst for positive transformation among the youth in underserved communities”, adds Fernandez.

The program intends to encourage adults to get into the sport of Football.   As Fernandez says, "It is never too late for adults to get into football.  The football field will be open 24/7 come mid-January anyway, and one can just drop by at SPARTA after work or even after a nightcap for a good football workout."

Fernandez adds, "We also encourage everyone to try calisthenics at the SPARTA Calisthenics Academy, to boost their strength through body weight movements."

SPARTA also has its Filipino Martial Arts classes, wherein students can learn the art of Kali, which has been used in Hollywood movies like 300.  In the classes, students are taught how to defend themselves against knives and other weapons in street encounters.

“The program also allows them to unleash their inner warrior.  Everyone deserves to feel safe--whether at home or during a commute, and learning basic skills in our classes can do that”, says Fernandez.

SPARTA initially opened early this year the very first FIFA 1-star indoor football field in the country.  It also recently opened the SPARTA Calisthenics Academy last month, which had the very successful Battle of the Bars event, wherein contestants from different parts of the country trekked to the Mandaluyong sports-facility for the said event.

Expect more from SPARTA this coming 2016 as it helps you unleash that inner warrior, with its #SpartanResolutions.  For inquiries, please call 6553799.
